Loft insulation is ECO4’s most-installed fabric measure — cheap to deliver, big EPC impact, and near-universal suitability. Qualifying households get lofts brought to the 270mm standard fully funded, but only until 31 December 2026.
Follow the funded route before the December 2026 deadline — packages are surveyed, funded and installed at no or low cost.
Check loft eligibility →You still have strong routes: Warm Homes: Local Grant (England), £7,500 BUS, 0% VAT to Mar 2027 and competitive private installation with one matched installer.
Check My Home →The scheme targets the current 270mm mineral-wool standard: empty lofts get full quilt installation; lofts with old, thin or slumped material (often 100mm from decades ago) get topped up. Loft hatches are insulated and draught-proofed, and pipes/tanks above the insulation line are lagged. Where the loft is a converted room, the correct measure becomes room-in-roof insulation instead — a different, more involved job the scheme also recognises.
The standard two doors: qualifying benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit GC and the rest) or a council Flex declaration, in EPC D–G homes. Because loft insulation scores efficiently, it appears in almost every ECO4 package — often alongside cavity or wall measures rather than alone, since ECO4’s whole-house rules push multi-measure projects.
Even outside the scheme, loft insulation is the highest-certainty payback in home energy — a quarter of an uninsulated home’s heat leaves through the roof, and a top-up pays back in 1–3 years. It’s also step one in our upgrade-order guide: every later measure (heat pump sizing especially) works better above a tight loft.
When ECO4 closes, funded loft routes narrow to England’s Warm Homes: Local Grant (insulation was 24% of its installs to end-July 2026) — while self-funded lofts stay cheap: around £900 installed 0→270mm, or ~£750 for a 120→270mm top-up (EST, May 2026) at 0% VAT. Eligible now means act now.
