The £7,500 BUS grant makes this the moment — and a pump sized for an insulated home is smaller, cheaper and runs at higher efficiency. 5. Battery. Best last, once solar surplus and usage patterns are known facts, not estimates.
A failing boiler jumps heating to the front. Replacing distress-purchase like-for-like locks in 15 more gas years; the BUS grant plus install lead times argue for a planned heat-pump switch instead. If the fabric is poor, pair the pump decision with at least loft insulation — the pump sizes smaller and the quotes drop.
Grant logic beats sequencing logic. If you’re eligible for ECO4 (closing December 2026) or the Warm Homes: Local Grant, take the funded package in whatever order the scheme delivers — funded measures in scheme order beat perfect measures at your own expense. ECO4’s deadline makes this time-critical.
Re-roofing? Solar racks integrate for a fraction of retrofit cost — and flat-roof works trigger insulation requirements anyway. Getting an EV with a cheap overnight tariff? Battery arbitrage economics arrive early. Renovating a room down to brick? That’s the moment for internal wall insulation at marginal cost. Sequence around the disruption you’re already paying for.
