What is home battery storage and what does it cost?

A home battery storage system stores electricity — either generated by your solar panels or imported from the grid during cheap-rate periods — and releases it when your panels aren’t generating or when electricity prices are high. It’s the single most effective way to maximise the value of solar panels.

FAQs — battery storage cost UK

Do I need solar panels to have a battery?
+

You don’t strictly need solar panels, but battery storage is most cost-effective when paired with solar. A standalone battery can be charged on cheap-rate overnight electricity (if you have a time-of-use tariff), but the payback period is longer without solar generation.

How long does a home battery last?
+

Most lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries carry a 10-year warranty and are expected to last 10–15 years. Lithium nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries are similar. Warranty degradation guarantees typically specify that the battery will retain at least 70–80% of its original capacity after the warranty period.

Is there VAT on battery storage?
+

Home battery storage systems installed in conjunction with solar panels benefit from 0% VAT. Standalone battery storage (without solar) is subject to 20% VAT unless installed as part of an exempt supply. This is an important cost consideration.
