Three live routes fund heating upgrades right now: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (£7,500 heat pumps), ECO4 (heating measures for eligible households, closing December 2026) and Warm Homes programmes. Different rules, different homes — here’s which fits yours.
England & Wales, open — funded to 31 March 2027, with the Warm Homes Plan signalling extension to 2030. Current values: £7,500 for air-to-water and ground/water-source heat pumps; £2,500 for residential air-to-air (new from 21 July 2026); £5,000 biomass (limited rural cases); £9,000 for qualifying off-gas-grid air-to-water/ground installations. No EPC requirement since 28 April 2026. The grant is claimed by your MCS installer and deducted from the quote. Full details on our BUS guide.
For benefits-route or council-Flex households in EPC D–G homes, ECO4 funds first-time central heating, heating controls, and air-source heat pumps as part of whole-house packages. Electric-heated and off-gas homes score especially well. This route disappears with the scheme on 31 December 2026 — no successor obligation exists. Eligibility details: ECO4 eligibility.
The Warm Homes: Local Grant (England, EPC D–G, income under £36k, via participating councils) can fund clean heating alongside insulation and solar — delivery varies by authority. The Warm Homes Loan Scheme is developing as subsidised finance for energy improvements; treat product availability conservatively until lenders launch. The Warm Home Discount (£150 off electricity, qualifying date 23 August 2026) is bill support rather than a heating grant, but stacks with everything above.
On qualifying benefits or Flex criteria in a D–G home? ECO4 before it closes — the packages are largest. Ready to move off gas/oil with a heat pump? BUS — open to all owner-occupiers regardless of income. Low income in England but not on benefits? WH:LG via your council. Our checker routes you in 60 seconds.
