🏛️ ECO4 × Solid Wall

ECO4 Solid Wall Insulation: The Scheme’s Biggest Prize

Solid wall insulation is the most valuable measure ECO4 funds — £8,000–£15,000 of work that pre-1930s households rarely fund privately. ECO4’s scoring rewards it heavily because nothing lifts an old home’s EPC further. The window: 31 December 2026.

Why solid-wall homes are ECO4's sweet spot

Around a third of UK homes — the pre-1930s stock — have solid walls losing a third of their heat. They dominate EPC bands E–G, exactly where ECO4’s whole-house scoring pays most. A solid-wall project routinely jumps a property two EPC bands, which is why suppliers fund five-figure wall systems for eligible households while the obligation lasts.

External vs internal under the scheme

The retrofit assessment decides: external (EWI) where the façade permits — best performance, no room loss, refreshed render; internal (IWI) for conservation settings or elevational constraints — room-by-room boards with full moisture design. Scheme work runs under PAS 2030/2035, which enforces the ventilation and moisture discipline this measure demands — the full technical picture is in our solid wall guide.

Eligibility

Benefits route or council Flex, property EPC D–G (E–G owner-occupier focus — where solid-wall homes overwhelmingly sit). Because these are larger projects, they consume the most scheme lead time: assessment, design, scaffold, install. Starting after early autumn 2026 genuinely risks the deadline.

If ECO4 passes you by

Post-scheme, England’s WH:LG lists insulation among fundable measures for eligible D–G homes; privately, EWI/IWI carries 0% VAT to March 2027. But nothing on the horizon matches ECO4’s willingness to fund whole solid-wall systems — if a route exists for you, this is the measure to chase first.
