☀️ ECO4 × Solar

Can You Get Solar Panels Through ECO4?

Yes — but not the way the ads claim. ECO4 can include solar PV within qualifying whole-home projects, subject to a 10kWp generation-capacity cap per home. It is not a universal “free solar panel grant.” Here’s exactly how solar features in ECO4 — and who genuinely qualifies before the scheme closes on 31 December 2026.

How solar actually works inside ECO4

ECO4 is a whole-house scheme: measures are selected to lift the property’s overall efficiency under the scheme’s scoring rules, not picked individually from a menu. Ofgem’s ECO4 delivery guidance contains explicit rules for delivering solar PV, including the 10kWp generation-capacity cap per home. In practice, solar typically features in packages for electrically heated or off-gas homes where panels contribute strongly to the required efficiency uplift — usually alongside insulation and heating measures, not instead of them.

Who can qualify

The same two routes as all ECO4 work: the benefits route (Universal Credit, Pension Credit Guarantee, and other means-tested benefits) or the council Flex route (low income or health vulnerability under your council’s published criteria), generally in EPC D–G homes. Whether solar enters your package depends on the retrofit assessment — no legitimate installer can promise “free solar” before surveying the property.

ECO4 solar vs the other solar routes

ECO4: fully funded within qualifying whole-home projects; benefits/Flex households; closes 31 Dec 2026. Warm Homes: Local Grant: England, EPC D–G, income under £36k — solar was 38% of all WH:LG installs to end-July 2026, the scheme’s biggest measure. Self-funded: 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, 6–10 year payback, SEG export income. If you qualify for either scheme, check it before paying privately — our checker routes you in 60 seconds.

Watch the deadline — and the ads

ECO4 ends 31 December 2026 with no successor obligation, and whole-home projects with solar need survey, design and installation time — realistically underway by autumn. Be wary of ads promising universal free panels: if an offer can’t name the scheme, the eligibility route and the funding administrator, it’s lead-bait, not a grant.
