Independent insulation comparison across Scotland. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness and surrounding areas. Scottish homeowners may qualify for Warmer Homes Scotland and other Scottish Government-funded schemes.
Scotland has a distinctive housing stock that differs significantly from England. Tenement flats make up a large proportion of the housing stock in Glasgow and Edinburgh — these multi-storey stone buildings present particular insulation challenges. Rural Scotland has a high proportion of detached stone-built properties, many of which are off the gas grid and rely on oil, LPG or electric heating.
Scotland’s colder average temperatures make energy efficiency improvements particularly valuable. The average Scottish home uses around 30% more energy for heating than the UK average. Many Scottish properties, particularly older stone-built homes and rural properties, have EPC ratings of D or below, making them potentially eligible for Scottish Government-funded energy efficiency support.

This provides free insulation and heating improvements for eligible households. Area Based Schemes and local authority programmes may also be available. ECO4 applies in Scotland but GBIS was an England-and-Wales-only scheme.
Tenement flats present specific challenges. Loft insulation is typically only relevant for top-floor flats. Internal wall insulation can improve performance on external walls. Communal decisions may be required for some measures. A property-specific assessment will identify what is possible for your individual flat.
Scotland has lower average temperatures and higher levels of wind and rain than most of England, making effective insulation particularly important. Many Scottish homes use more energy for heating than equivalent English properties, making the financial case for insulation improvement stronger.
